Beetlejuice

Until tonight I had never seen the movie Beetlejuice. I’ve seen small clips of it and I remember it being referenced when it came out while I was a sophomore in high school. I had a good time watching it with my kids. It did however remind me of a lot of the iconic movies of the ’80s that I watched over and over. Such movies as Back to the Future, Better Off Dead, and Pretty in Pink. I think a fun list would be to make would be these movies and when I remember watching them.

I remember that I saw a lot of movies on VHS in middle and high school. Early on, we would rent a VHS player from the store and a couple of movies. At that time it was a big family event. I remember watching Splash and High Road to China this way. Those were fun and exciting times. I feel that my own children do not get the same thrill when we rent movies since we already own the player. I wonder what they do get excited about in that way?

Viva Las Vegas

In the fall of 2002, I went to what was basically the last Comdex. It wasn’t the biggest show ever. That Comdex was the one that I went to in the fall of 1999. That show was incredible. At any rate, I love going to Vegas any time I can get there. But then again I would think that most people I know would say that.

Inside the convention center was this statue. I thought it was great. I couldn’t figure out why it was tucked away in the corner under some stairs. This statue is priceless. And best of all, it matches the carpet of all the casinos in town.

Mariners baseball

I loved going to baseball games in Seattle. The summers there are beautiful. The stadium is clean. The air is crisp and cool. There’s a buzz in the stadium that can only be described as “summer”.

And who can forget the first time that I saw Roger Clemmens pitch live. This is also the same night that I learned to hate Freddie Garcia. Take a look at the picture and see for yourself why. Freddie made it ot the end of the Third. Roger made it to the end of the Seventh. Also this was the first time I saw the Yankees live as well.

A concert missed

April 4, 1992 I missed a great concert. Now I’ve missed other concerts in the past that I’ve had a ticket to. As a matter of fact, I’ve had a ticket to see INXS three different times and I missed them each time.

As I stumbled across this in my box of stuff, I wish I would have been able to go to this one.

KJQ

KJQ was the radio station that I loved from ’89 – ’92. At the time, it played the music that I’ve never heard before. Now, it seems that everyone has. It was the 80′s modern music station and was the only major station playing this music. I’ll go into more detail as we go on about the impact listening to it had, so I can look forward to writing that. Right now I want to talk about their swag.

KJQ had some of the funnest swag around at the time. Towards the end they were obsessed with cows and they issued a series of cow stickers for your car window. I don’t think I ever heard them use the word cow. They perfered calling this “The Milk Beast”. That term always made me chuckle. This is their Christmas Milk Beast sticker that they issued. I’ve always found it my favorite.

The scariest movie of all time

To this day I have not watched it again. I know many that say the same thing. It’s wrong I’m telling you, just plain and simple. I watched it with my parents when I was probably around ten. What were they thinking. The movie was Poltergeist. If you saw it at that age, you should be in complete agreement with me.

Sometimes, my closet door still scares me.

Music and Music

I’ve decided that I miss the music in my life. So I’ve started compiling a list of all the concerts that I’ve been so I can relive some of the memories I had at them. Also, I’ve added a soundtrack page to tag music that reminds me of people, places, or activities. Just the act of writing these songs down and tagging them has brought back a flood of memories that I thought had been long gone. For example, with Jared Turner, Mike Dutton, (a girl that I can’t remember her name), and I were driving through the desert to L.A. reading Jane’s Addiction songs aloud like poetry. That’s a memory that I hope lasts forever.

Cuts You Up

When I listen to Peter Murphy – Cuts You Up, I’m reminded of driving from Delta to Provo on a beautiful spring day. I can almost smell the fresh air as I drive. It’s crazy how a certain song can take you back to moment in time where you can see, feel, and smell the experience like it was yesterday.

The Cult – Wildflower reminds me of dancing at the now gone Ivory Tower. That was a great place to dance and have fun. I used to go there all the time from ’90-’91. Later on the head DJ, Jack, and I would become friends for many many years.

I miss the time when music was so focal to everything I did. My life had a soundtrack.

An open note to Vanillia Ice

There was a time that I remember hating you and your song Ice Ice Baby. I thought it represented everything wrong with music at the start of the ’90s. I thought I would never forgive you for destroying one of the best songs ever, Queen’s Under Pressure.

But now, I’m singing a different tune. Your song is not iconic. I enjoy it at karaoke and piano bars. It makes me smile now when I hear it at parties. So here I am saying thank you Vanillia Ice, thank you.

(but please, don’t take this as a sign that I want you to make more music)

That one Morrissey concert

The summer of ’91 I saw Morrissey in concert. I had been listening to a whole lot of Smiths when I went to college. I’m not sure if it’s because Kathy listened to them so I decided to, but at the time I was really into anything by or related to the Smiths. So, I bought me 4 tickets the minute they went on sale. The concert was at the Park West Ampitheater.

Now, I had bought 4 tickets but didn’t have anyone but myself to go with. Amy Sheen was in Provo for the summer. I called her and she was all over that. Since I had 2 more, Amy invited a friend of hers from Spanish Fork. (I can’t remember her name at the moment) So we all got together and headed up to Park City in my RX-7. (Yes, I know it’s a two seater and there was three of us.)

On the drive up we stopped in Heber and had a shake a Grannies. Now this may have been one of the first moments that I remember doing this, but since Grannies was something I thought you had to do I did it. I’m sure I’ll get to more on that subject later. I remember feeling uncomfortable that I was eating this monster mint chocolate chip shake in front of those two when I really didn’t even want it. I’m not sure what that part is important, but it really sticks out.

Now the rest of the evening is a bit of a blur. We got to the concert. Midge Ure opened up. I learned to appreciate him and Ultravox later, but at this time I only knew the song Dear God at the time. We danced the whole concert. We had a great time. From a concert involvement and enjoyment perspective, I remember this as one of my favorites. I don’t remember much else besides that. I remember it most as a great concert spent with Amy who I didn’t spend enough time with while I had the chance.
